Walt Whitman

Walt Whitman was an American 18th century poet. He was born in 1819 and passed away in 1892. He also was a nurse during the war. Walt Whitman was a realist, because he used great detail to describe the characters and used real life situations. Here is one of his poems, which was featured in the movie, "Dead Poets Society".

O Captain! My Captain!

O Captain! My Captain! our fearful trip is done,
The ship has a weather'd every rack, the prize we sought is won,
The port is near, the bells i hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops o red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead...
